What I’m Reading

Posted in Rambling by theunlib on the January 6th, 2007

Just in case you’re interested…

In the Beginning… Was the Command Line, Neil Stephenson

This is a really good book, loaned to me by Mark, about (bland as it may sound) operating systems, how they came to be, the philosophy behind them, and especially Linux. It’s actually an informative, entertaining read. I’m really liking it.

Ubuntu Linux for Non-Geeks, Rickford Grant

I took the plunge, and installed Linux on my desktop. The result being that I can no longer print and I have no idea how to install ANYTHING on to my desktop!!! Well, I went onto the Ubuntu forums, and though very helpful, I found them populated with people who didn’t really remember when they were and Linux-Stupid as me. One of them mentioned this book, so I immediately ordered it from Schuler’s. I’ve only read the first chapter, but OMG, is it JUST what I needed.

The Last Templar, Raymond Khoury

This was a Christmas present from a friend. I’m not really a “bestseller” kind of a girl, and though I find novels like this a bit hokey, it’s actually not that poorly written, and a lot of the historical background is very interesting.

What are YOU reading (yes, this is a poorly disguised plea for comments). I have over a dozen subscribers now (yay!), so come on, post!!!

I’m reading “Cold Warrior: James Jesus Angleton : The Cia’s Master Spy Hunter” by Tom Mangold. Hubby initially checked it out but I got interested in it too. The movie The Good Shepard is VERY VERY VERY LOOOOSLY based on this guy.

I’m reading Cultural Amnesia by Clive James. It’s a collection of his essays on famous artists, writers and whatnot.

On the linux front, if you ever need any help, let me know. My work iMac is running OS X, Windows XP, Ubuntu and SuSE linux.
