Internet in Japan…cont.

Posted in Rambling by theunlib on the September 25th, 2007

So, I called my mother and asked her to contact her family in Japan to see if they have dial-up internet or highspeed, and if highspeed, whether or not they had wireless.  I knew this would be difficult because my mother doesn’t even really know what the internet is.   I made it simple.

“Mom, ask if to get on the internet by plugging into the phone line or something else.”

“What something else?”

“Don’t worry about it, just… something else.  And, if it’s “something else” ask if the computer gets on the internet by plugging into the wall, or if it goes through the air.”

“Okay, Phone line or air”

“No!  Phone line or something else, and if something else, then wall or air.”

“Oh oh oh, wall or air”.

“No….Phone line or something else.  If it doesn’t plug into the phone line, ask if it’s their computer plugs into something, or if it travels through the air.”

I knew this was going to be difficult… but, my mother called, and asked my questions in some form…her answer was:

“No phone line.. .satellite.”

“They have their internet service through satellite, or is that what they’re calling their wireless network?”

“Satellite, they have satellite.”

Sigh.

Help.

Adapters, Japan, Computers and my Mother

Posted in Rambling by theunlib on the September 19th, 2007

Well all, I’m leaving October 3 to spend 11 days (I think…) in Japan with  my mother.  For those of you who do not know already, my mother is nuts.  So, I have to have my happy little laptop up and running while overseas.  I have the electrical adapter plug thing, but just realized that I probably need more for the internet connection.  Are there any well-seasoned travelers out there who can tell me what all I need????  PLEASE?????  :)  Thanks.

Poor, Neglected Little Blog

Posted in Library 2.0, Michigan Library Consortium, Rambling, Second Life by theunlib on the September 11th, 2007

So, I’ve once again been neglecting my little blog…  I know it’s a poor excuse, but I’ve been SO busy lately!  Here’s what’s been going on.

For the past few weeks, I’ve been working on the new shopping center in SL that I own along with a colleague in Kansas.

Today I taught an OCLC Local Holdings Maintenance workshop at Wayne State University to some of the staff there.  I wore my new boots, walked all over everywhere, and ended up driving home in my socks, my feet hurt so badly.

I have the worst allergies ever, and want nothing more that to curl up and go to sleep.

Tomorrow, I’m taking the new Linux workshop offered by MLC.. It should be fun!

Then, I have to record an online workshop, in preparation for an eLearning presentation  Kathy Petlelwski and I are doing at Internet Librarian 2007 at the end of October.

I’m doing script revisions for the machinima I’m having made for the IL07 presentation, that will also be shown when I present at MLA on Second Life.
I’m going to OCLC for four days at the end of this month, for our twice yearly services meeting.

Shortly after, on October 3, I’m flying to Japan w/my mother, to visit family for 11 days.

Then, I’ll be home for about… a week and a half, and then I’m going to IL07 in Monterey to present.  After that, there’s the MLA presentation… I really need to start thinking about that.. Also, the MLA leadership academy is meeting for a day before the conference as well.

Wow… I’m tired just thinking about it. :(
