When You Were Little

Posted in Rambling by theunlib on the April 4th, 2007

When I was little…

1. My obsession was: Keeping my entire family within eyesight so that nothing horrible would happen to them. This included tying my sister to our front door once when she was on her way out, causing her to rip her belt loop. She was not pleased.

2. My favorite TV show was: Punky Brewster. I had a strange obsession with abandoned or orphaned children, hence, #1.

3. My favorite book was: When I was very young, The Fire Cat, by Esther Averill. Homeless animals were included in my obsession!

4. My favorite movie was: The Neverending Story. The little boy’s mother was dead. See a pattern?

5. My favorite food was: Tuna Helper Creamy Pasta Tuna Casserole, no kidding.

6. My LEAST favorite food was: canned corn/swiss steak

7. My favorite stuffed animal was: a baby leopard I called “Kee Kee” (baby for “kitty kitty”)

8. My favorite color was: Yellow, until my sister said it was an ugly color and told me my favorite color was red.

9. My favorite thing about school/preschool was: when my fifth grade teacher read us James and the Giant Peach (Roald Dahl). I didn’t like him otherwise (the teacher, not the author).

10. My favorite game was: Capture the Flag

11. My favorite toy was: Honestly, my imagination

12. My best friend was: Nikki, Lisa, Kimmy, Jenny and Julie

13. My worst enemy was: Cece Postal and Laura Jackson. GRRR
14. My “boyfriend”/”girlfriend” was: Jeff, whose mother worked for my father. I would make him put on his swim trunks and I would put on my lacy slip and make us play “General Hospital”.

15. My teacher’s name was: umm…different every year…
16. The name I called my mom was: Oh gawd…Mommy-Moo moo… I don’t think she liked it…

17. The name I called my dad was: Dad

18. Another grown up in my life was: my grandfather

19. My favorite thing to pretend was: That we were really poor and were dressed in rags, starving to death, trying to scavenge food. I was a strange child. Beckie Moore always wanted to play x-rated Barbies instead.  The result being that we usually pretended we were poor sluts.
20. I was scared of: The gorilla, Franky, who lived in my sister’s closet. He was trying to kidnap my mother.

And the bonus question…

What did you want to be when you grew up? A psyciatrist/teacher/bus driver/social worker.

I love social networking, really… I do!

I love technology of all kinds. It’s frustrating, yes, but at this point, I couldn’t live without it. But Analyzing how huge of a role all of my “toys” play in my daily life is a bit scary. Here’s and example of a typical day.

The other day I woke in the morning by the beeping of my alarm clock. A normal thing for most of us, but really it is technology, right? I came downstairs and let the dogs out. After coming back in, I immediately opened my laptop synced my PPC, and then checked not one, not two, but three email accounts. I picked out what clothes to wear, and then turned on the shower water. While it was warming up (for much longer than it needed to), I checked my RSS feeds. I then jumped in the shower, finished up my morning duties (dispensing meds to poor Lester Beagle and neurotic Rory, kenneling everyone up, etc.), grabbed my phone/PPC, stashed it in my purse, made sure my iPod was in there, stuck in my thumb drive and pulled out my digital camera to dig for my keys.

Finally, I drove to work, got there and immediately pulled out my PPC, hooked up my iPod, logged into my computer and logged into our in house IM system. I logged into my Meebo account and my work email account. Sometime during the morning, I checked my gmail account and my yahoo account and accepted a few contacts in my LinkedIn account. At some point in the afternoon, I received a message on my MySpace account from my SL buddy, State Library of Kansas librarian, Rocky Vallejo. I replied to his email in gtalk via Meebo. Meanwhile, I received notification that a librarian friend had added friended me in Facebook. I spent the day sending out numerous work related emails and IM in the office with my coworkers. Then, I text messaged my board member with the animal rescue that I volunteer with, about Lester Beagle’s condition. I also spent a small amount of time in Second Life, to test out the “Book of Answers”, a cool new gadget we have at our Second Life building. I was having issues with my work email sending messages from it to SPAM. I then checked out MLC’s blogs to see if anything important was going on.

I came home and synced my PPC and checked my feeds again, and my email accounts and logged into Meebo. On and off throughout the evening, I checked my feeds, posted to my blog, and later in the evening logged into SL, where a friend asked me if I had joined Ning, a new social networking site that has a ton of library 2.0 activity. So, I called up the URL and created yet another account, IMing my friend along the way, within Second Life, and IMing other friends through Meebo…all the while, my amazing robot vacuum cleaning the rug.

It all just seems like too much! You just want to stop and laugh!

First Blooms!

Posted in Rambling by theunlib on the April 3rd, 2007

So, I’ve been jealous of everyone’s first blooms, that are popping up on everyone’s blogs. Like, the snakelady has flowers already, and she isn’t even a gardener-type person!!! Librarianne has GORGEOUS flowers already. NOT FAIR. I was in full pout about this until today when I went in my backyard, and actually LOOKED at them. I know there’s no way these could have popped up overnight…so I think I must have been too busy pouting to actually look at my own blooms…

Last fall, my friend Aaron dug up some rhubarb and gave it to me in plastic grocery bags. I then stuck them in a pot, and them there for way too long before sticking them in the ground after the first from. I know they say that stuff is hardy, but I was SO surprised when I walked over to the garden patch and saw them!

I can’t wait until they get bigger!  I can already taste the rhubarb upside down cake I’m going to make later this summer!
