Meeting in Pajamas - pics!
So, at this very moment, I’m sitting at home with a dog in my lap, wearing my pajamas and drinking a soda, while in a strange, virtual, parallel reality called Second Life, I’m attending a library staff meeting discussing our goals for the next six months.
This world is weird.
The meeting is progressing like any staff meeting would. I know this because here I am, half paying attention, while doing something else. We’re discussing the grand opening evens, how they went, giving praise where it is due. Strange thing is…attending this meeting are people (okay, avatars) who look like fairies and witches, street walkers and raver goths, there are avatars with fur and tails and names like Gonzo and Spiral, Eiseldora and Camden. There are people who I am sure look like their normal self…one librarian in jeans and a sweatshirt, wearing a baseball cap, one ones with….errr…purple fur.
Me, I’m wearing black pants and an oriental looking shirt, only a minute amount more low cut than I would wear in rl (that’s sl talk for “real life”, you guys). That’s because it’s “work”. I’m often wearing raver pants with purple hair or once, wearing solely water. But for now, I’m the serious librarian, kind of…except that my avatar is sitting in a full lotus on a japanese floor pillow.
Well, I guess it’s time to start paying attention again… the good thing about sl is that there are chat transcripts!
’til next time.
Here is me looking much like I normally do in rl meetings (on the right).

Here is a pic of the turnout, not bad at all.

What I’ve Been Doing (and why I haven’t been here)
So, I’ve been MIA for the past month and a half. Things have been crazy! First, there was all of the trouble I was having creating this new site. Ugh. I still haven’t gotten everything right yet. Unfortunately, it’s been moved down on my priority list.
Life-wise, I have 3 foster dogs right now (I normally try really hard not to mention the word “dog” on this blog, because this is the geeky librarian blog), 1 of whom is in quarantine, 2 who are ill, and then there’s are my two who are just…patience killing.
In addition, tons of cool, but time consuming things are going on.
1. I’m in the midst of launching our new online workshop program. I’ve trained one group of trainers and am doing the other half tomorrow.
2. Our program series, The Library Rebooted is in progress with the super cool blogging/wiki/IM program coming up on the 15th of November.
3. MLC has recently joined the NEE, which isn’t taking too much time…yet!
4. We’re in the process (well, I am) of opening the virtual branch of the Michigan Library Consortium in Second Life, which is way super cool, but SO time eating! I have now restricted myself to only 30 minutes per day (at home). 1 hour on weekends.
That being said, I need a vacation! I took a few days off a while back to get my head back together, but somehow I ended up more scattered…
Internet Librarian is going on right now. So many people have asked me in the past month or so whether or not I’m going that I think I’ll see if the powers that be will let me go next year. It sounds cool, and I can totally see how it could be related with my job. (ahem, Ruth…what do you think?)
I need a nap.
