The unLibrarian
I do not want people to be agreeable, as it saves me the trouble of liking them. ~Jane Austen.

a big fan of open - how open source soolves problems in rural libraryland (JESSAMYN!!!)

Posted in Evergreen, eg09 by theunlib on the May 22nd, 2009

Yay!!

Jess’s stuff

she is cheap, political and rural/local.  this is what draws her toopen source…  :)

She likes collaboration, working together.  Open Source is where all the freaks hang out and she’s comfortable there :)   This is why we love her.

Her library uses Ubuntu and KOHA

I do not want to type about Jessamyn.  I want to sit back and listen.  Look at her slides, if you want.  Shhhh… I’m trying to pay attention.

Lars from Sweden?  Forgive me if I got that wrong.. Lightening talks are FAST.

  • they did some really cool things with their catalog.  Youc an mouse over and get info straight from the library website front page.  CS Library… must google later :)
  • They also have some cool FRBR-ization

Coding Hackfest Results - Dan Scott

  • hmmm geek speak I don’t really get… :)
  • 3 things
  • New Books Aded List - Jeff Godin  by branch, by shelving location.  Done based on volume creation date. Yay Michigan Evergreen hackers :)
  • Editing serials holdings
  • MFHD captions rewrite - this is actually looking really cool… can’t wait to see it live.

Developers Update - Mike Rylander EG09

Developers Update

Mike Rylander :)  We like Mike.  He is a nice boy.

evergreen.org/doduwiki

Mike went over the road map.Acquisition will be exposed in 1.6.  It will have the full US English and Canadian translation in the next week.  Cal outs will be put out for the other translations.  There will be a final cut of 1.6 NEXT week, except by the non English translations.

Lots of usability and cosmetic tweeks.  Shelving locations by default will be displayed right up by the call numbers!

Acquisitions - EDI work going on through project CONIFER, but is not ready just yet, will get plugged in hopefully really soon.

Even and notification codeword will allow you to do all kinds of “fun new things”.  Something having to do with triggers? lol  Now, for print and email notifications.  This will not be an add on, but part of the core system.

Circ and Hold rules are now set up in an interface.  This will greatly increase system speed and load on the server.  YAY!!

All admin stuff have their own top level admin menues.

Jason has a new button bar to quickly open certain tabs.

There is now a fast item add in the cat module.

In the OPAC…

It alliows you to edit the MARC so that so that things appear only for your institution.. there’s a lot more to this that I need to do more research on.  It apparently eliminates the need for dummy items?!?  Good for completely electronic resources.

There are a LOT of COOL OPAC things in 1.6… Can we migrate next week?  Please?  Know that I’m kidding! lol

It will display holdings for issues, indexes and supp material!!!  WOOT!

EG09 Get out of the Frying Pan!

Posted in Evergreen, eg09 by theunlib on the May 21st, 2009

Lori Ayre, Galecia Associates

These ladies are fun and silly.

Their presentation is very interactive, hence why I am staring down at my screen at this moment. lol

They’re having us say words that we think of when thinking of Open Source

  • group
  • think
  • variety
  • freedom
  • access
  • change
  • fail
  • kittens
  • control
  • possibilities
  • flexibility
  • hope
  • trust
  • community
  • contribute

good words :)

Get out of the Frying Pan, but not into the fire

The best part is… you are in control.

You decide how it works

“You decide how you work’  If the software doesn’t work ho you want it, change it.

Sorry this ended so abruptly… work called :(

EG09 Migration Nation - Planning for Migration Success

Posted in Evergreen, eg09 by theunlib on the May 21st, 2009

Speakers:  Jennifer Bielewski, Katherine Gregory and Shae Tetterton.

PINES started as a Y2K project.=

Migrated to Evergreen on Sept. 5, 2006.  They had saturated their system, more libraries wanted to join, but they didn’t have space on their server.

They were on Unicorn.

Some of PINES libraries are waiting for acquisitions.  Other reasons.

Tip:  don’t migrate at the end of the fiscal year.
